Beyond the Bulge: a Fundamental Relation between Supermassive Black Holes and Dark Matter Halos

چکیده

The possibility that the masses M• of supermassive black holes (SBHs) correlate with the total gravitational mass of their host galaxy, or the mass MDM of the dark matter halo in which they presumably formed, is investigated using a sample of 16 spiral and 20 elliptical galaxies. The bulge velocity dispersion σc, typically defined within an aperture of size R < ∼ 0.5 kpc, is found to correlate tightly with the galaxy’s circular velocity vc, the latter measured at distances from the galactic center at which the rotation curve is flat, R ∼ 20 − 80 kpc. By using the well known M• −σc relation for SBHs, and a prescription to relate vc to the mass of the dark matter halo MDM in a standard ΛCDM cosmology, the correlation between σc and vc is equivalent to one between M• and MDM . Such a correlation is found to be nonlinear, with the ratio M•/MDM decreasing from 2×10−4 for MDM ∼ 1014 M⊙, to 10−5 for MDM ∼ 1012 M⊙. Preliminary evidence suggests that halos of mass smaller than ∼ 5× 1011 M⊙ are increasingly less efficient – perhaps unable – at forming SBHs.

Evolution of supermassive black holes

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are nowadays believed to reside in most local galaxies, and the available data show an empirical correlation between bulge luminosity or stellar velocity dispersion and black hole mass, suggesting a single mechanism for assembling black holes and forming spheroids in galaxy halos. The evidence is therefore in favour of a co-evolution between galaxies, black hole...

Strong gravitational lensing: Why no central black holes?

We investigate how central black holes (BHs) inhabited in galactic dark halos would affect strong gravitational lensing. The distribution of integral lensing probability with image separations are calculated for quasars of redshift 1.5 by foreground dark matter halos. The mass density of dark halos is taken to be NavarroFrenk-White (NFW) profile such that, when the mass of a halo is less than 1...

Supermassive black holes in scalar field galaxy halos

Ultralight scalar fields provide an interesting alternative to WIMPS as halo dark matter. In this paper we consider the effect of embedding a supermassive black hole within such a halo, and estimate the absorption probability and the accretion rate of dark matter onto the black hole. We show that the accretion rate would be small over the lifetime of a typical halo, and hence that supermassive ...

From the earliest seeds to today’s supermassive black holes

I review scenarios for the assembly of supermassive black holes (MBHs) at the center of galaxies that trace their hierarchical build-up far up in the dark matter halo “merger tree”. Monte Carlo realizations of the merger hierarchy in a ΛCDM cosmology, coupled to semi-analytical recipes, are a powerful tool to follow the merger history of halos and the dynamics and growth of the MBHs they host. ...

Joint Formation of Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies

The tight correlation between black hole mass and velocity dispersion of galactic bulges is strong evidence that the formation of galaxies and supermassive black holes are closely linked. I review the modeling of the joint formation of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes in the context of the hierarchical structure formation paradigm. 1.1 Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Bul...
